Foster care is a journey that brings together families and children from diverse backgrounds, each with unique cultural identities. Understanding and respecting these cultural backgrounds is crucial for the well-being of foster children and the success of their placements. Cultural competency is not just an ideal; it’s a necessary practice that ensures foster children feel seen, heard, and valued.

In this blog you’ll learn the importance of cultural competency in foster care and provide actionable tips for resource parents to embrace and support the diverse cultural backgrounds of the children in their care.

What is Cultural Competency?

Cultural competency is the ability to understand, respect, and effectively interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. It involves recognizing and appreciating the differences in beliefs, values, behaviors, and social norms that exist among various cultural groups.

Cultural competency is not just about awareness but also about taking actionable steps to bridge cultural gaps and create inclusive environments. It encompasses a continuous process of learning, self-reflection, and adaptation to ensure that one's interactions and practices are respectful and responsive to the cultural needs of others.

The Importance of Cultural Competency in Foster Care

One of the beautiful things about foster families is that they can be made up of a diverse cultural background, from the resource parents to the children. Creating an environment that celebrates not only the family’s culture but also the child’s, allows them to nurture an important part of their identity.

Building Trust and Connection

Being placed in a new home can be a scary experience for a child, and when the family’s cultural practices and norms differ significantly from their own, it can cause additional stress.

To help the child feel more comfortable and heard, take the time and effort to understand their cultural background. This effort can send a powerful message of acceptance and validation to the child.

Promoting Mental and Emotional Well-being

Cultural conflict can lead to feelings of isolation and identity confusion in foster children. Children who feel that their cultural identity is overlooked or undervalued can experience stress, anxiety, and depression.

By embracing their foster child’s culture, resource parents can create an environment where children feel respected and safe to be themselves.

Tips for Cultural Competency in Foster Care

Educate Yourself

Educating yourself on cultural practices that you are unaware of is a great first step. Resource parents should actively seek to learn about the cultural backgrounds of the children in their care. This includes understanding customs, traditions, language, and social norms.

Another way to learn more is having conversations with your foster child. Learn from their perspective what their culture means to them and show active listening by asking questions. By doing this simple yet powerful task of having a conversation with your foster child you are showing them that you care and that they’re important.

Celebrate Traditions

Incorporating a child's traditions into daily life can help them feel comfortable and more at home. This could include celebrating specific holidays, cooking traditional meals, or participating in cultural events.

Encouraging children to share their traditions with the family not only fosters a sense of belonging but also enriches the cultural experiences of the entire household.

Be Open and Respectful

Cultural competency requires an open mind and a respectful attitude. Resource parents should be prepared to listen and learn from the children in their care, acknowledging and valuing their perspectives. It’s important to avoid making assumptions or stereotypes based on a child's cultural background. Instead, approach each child as an individual with a unique identity and take the time to get to know them and their history.

Lean on Your Resources and Community

Effective communication with your foster child is essential for understanding and respecting their cultural background. However, it's equally important to maintain open communication with your assigned social worker. Your social worker, who has guided you through your foster care journey, possesses valuable insights and can provide further educational resources and connect you with community. By reaching out to your resources, you can broaden your knowledge on how to better support your foster child.
